Professional Experience
Austyn is a professional civil engineer, with local and international project experience dealing with water resources, heavy civil construction, Care of Water, erosion & sediment control (ESC), and project controls including scheduling, estimating, quality control, cost control, and field engineering. Austyn has over 10 years of experience working for engineering consultants and prime contractors. His experience has focused on hydrotechnical & civil engineering design, water management, water quality, quality control, and safety. He has developed practical and cost-effective permanent and temporary ESC and Care of Water programs for a wide array of public and private clients for small and multi-million-dollar projects. Lower Sarcee South Feedermain Ph.II Part 2, Whissell Contracting Ltd., 2022 – Project engineer responsible for developing and preparing City of Calgary ESC plans to support linear pipe installation.
NW Inner City Upper Plateau Separation, Whissell Contracting Ltd., 2022 – Project engineer responsible for developing and preparing City of Calgary ESC plans and support to major underground storm system upgrade.
Bragg Creek Flood Mitigation Care of Water, Wilco, AB, 2020 to 2022 – Project engineer responsible for developing and preparing Care of Water and ESC plans and overseeing ESC site inspections to support construction of flood mitigation measures at Bragg Creek ($50M). Worked to prepare ESC plans and review weekly inspection reports during construction. Included the design of a temporary channel diversion for river isolation works.
Ogden Road Bridge River Access Boat Launch ESC Plans, Wilco, AB, 2020 – Project engineer responsible for developing and preparing ESC plans for submission to the City of Calgary for a new Boat Launch and parking lot into the Bow River. Site challenges included contaminated soils and proximity to Bow River.
Boulton Creek Campground Expansion, AEP, AB, 2017 - 2019 - Project Engineer involved with the expansion of a full serviced campground loop and trails. Performed engineering design, construction support, and managed the client relationship with Alberta Environment and Parks.
Barrier Dam Day Use Area, AEP, AB, 2018 - 2019 - Project Engineer in charge of a parking lot and water access at the Barrier Dam Day Use Area. Work performed included detailed design, specification preparation, tendering, and construction support.
Three Sisters Creek Flood Mitigation, Town of Canmore, AB - Water resources engineer, responsible assessing the impacts of the 2013 flood, and various river engineering methods to protect the creek and downstream stakeholders from future flooding, erosion, and sediment transport events. Responsibilities included conceptual design, detailed design, regulatory support, tender support, and construction contract administration.
Fording River Coal Mine, Graham Construction, BC, 2017 - 2018 - Project Engineer in charge of developing and managing Care of Water plans and environmental field programs for construction of multiple mine water management system expansions (>$8M) at Teck’s Fording River Coal mine site. Performed hydrological analysis, field investigations, and staged construction plans to meet Teck’s environmental regulatory requirements. Included in-stream isolation designs, multi-phased ESC plans, sampling and monitoring programs. Provided practical and effective solutions to address erosion and sedimentation.

Ribbon Creek Flood Protection, Alberta Environment & Parks, AB, 2016 - 2018 - Project engineer involved with the design, tendering, and construction of a flood protection berm. Performed engineering design, tendering support, quantities estimates, ESC and ECO plan, and regulatory support for Water Act Approval.
Joslyn North Mine, Total E&P Canada, Northern Alberta, 2012 - 2015 - Site investigation and engineering design for construction of drainage ditching, berms, culverts, sedimentation ponds, containment ponds, river diversions, and hydraulic drop structures. QA inspections and detailed construction progress reporting. Performed detailed quantity take-offs and estimates for drainage works. Hydraulic analysis of drainage structures. Design of drainage decommissioning including regulator communication and preparation of presentations materials to obtain permits to perform work. Included numerous ESC and Care of Water designs at dozens of locations at over 21 km2 site over 4 year program. Regulatory approvals engineering support. Water quality verification testing.
Storm and Erosion Assessments, Alberta and B.C., Multiple Clients, 2012 to Current – Project Engineer responsible for the historical analysis, professional commentary, and investigation of storm and flood related damages relating to insurance claims, public concerns, and other private and public clients seeking recommendations for long and short term mitigation including emergency mitigation programs.
Land Development, B.C and Alberta Multiple Sites, 2012-Current – Storm water management planning, design, and reporting for residential and commercial land development approvals. Performed single and continuous rainfall event hydraulic modeling of sites using historical data and site reconnaissance. Design and inspection of ESC programs. Consulting engineer for ESC inspection, mitigation, improvements, and design.
Heavy Civil & Transportation Construction, 2009-2011, 2016 - Current Project Engineer who has worked for multiple civil construction contractors for construction projects ranging between $950$M to $25M. Experience includes municipal, road building, tunneling, bridge construction, foundation construction, heli-portable construction, paving, mining, construction execution, QA/QC programs, contract administration and more.
