Practice Lead, Environment & Regulatory

Background

Neil Sandstrom decided to become an Environmental Engineer after working as a Petroleum Technologist assessing contaminated sites in the late 1990's. He found contaminant fate and transport fascinating and took his early work in hydrocarbons into acid rock drainage and metal leaching. This led to work in mine closure and reclamation, eventually leading him to manage an Environmental Impact Assessment for an oil sands mine. When that mega-project did not come to fruition, he transferred to an operating mine to make things real again. Family needs brought him back to Calgary, where he is supporting SweetTech with a variety of projects.

At SweetTech, Neil enjoys the spectrum of work, from homeowners to Alberta Parks and the largest oil producers in Canada. His experience spans disciplines and project scales. At this point in his career, Neil takes a lot of pleasure in applying his expertise to mentoring junior staff and existing clients to navigate complex situations.

Neil and his wife Carrie have lived in six different places over 30 years and are certain Calgary is home. They can ski six months of the year, visiting their oldest son in Barcelona or their youngest son in Whistler when they need the beach or mountains.
