Description
Cardinal River Headwaters Trail is multi-use recreation trail, located in Whitehorse Wildland Provincial Park, which attracts equestrians, hikers, mountain bikers, and OHV users. The area houses a sensitive environment, including critical habitat for Bull Trout.
SweetTech was retained by Alberta Parks to assess the trail conditions at the headwaters and prepare detailed design recommendations to upgrade the trail and address the erosion and sediment control and environmental protection issues. This involved topographical data collection for the area and a rockfall hazard assessment.
SweetTech’s designs allowed for continued and improved use of the Cardinal River area while reducing impact on the sensitive local environment. The designs incorporated constructability considerations for the remote location, including the establishment and reclamation of local cobble and common fill borrow sources. The refurbishment was planned with a focus on sustainability, practicality, accessibility, and enhanced visitor experience.
