Shippagan Culvert Assessment and Replacement

SweetTech Engineering was retained by CORBO Inc. (CORBO) to conduct an engineering study of an existing 40+ year old culvert in Shippagan, New Brunswick. The town had concerns about the integrity of the existing culvert and requested a report on repair or replacement options should they be deemed necessary. SweetTech reviewed site photos and inspection records of the culvert and surrounding area and presented multiple repair and replacement options to the client to restore full culvert functionality.

Based on the outcome of the options study, SweetTech received direction to proceed with the detailed design of a full culvert replacement. Careful selection of the most suitable pipe materials was important for the pipe to last in the brackish environment, while also considering costs. SweetTech developed a detailed construction sequence which allowed the causeway over the culvert to remain open to local traffic. This staged construction utilized sheet piling to allow the replacement works to be completed in the dry, in conjunction with a modular free span bridge to allow traffic over the trench as replacement works were ongoing. SweetTech supported CORBO remotely throughout the regulatory approvals, tendering and construction phases of the project by providing technical input regarding field-level issues as they arose.
